See what gak thinks of the beers from River West Brewing at Beer Is My Life!

Found this place by smell...they were brewing a weiss at the time. Beautiful seating area and atmosphere. As usual, didn't eat. Weiss was nice and light. Berliner was interestingly rare.I tried it both with and without raspberry syrup. It was almost uncomfortable to drink without! There was a scottish ale on hand pump, I cannot suggest it at all due to the "band-aid" scent and taste. Overall, a very confortable place even if there are no foot rails on the bar. The beer was fine, the wings were great, and the service couldn't have been better. (Date added: 4/4/98)

berliner weiss - clear, light taste going down w/a fresh hops aftertaste. go easy on the raspberry syrup to remove lacticity.
india pale ale - sucks. needs lots of raspberry syrup doubledecker doppelbock - light bodied w/dark character. deceivingly dark & delicious.
bitters- thisch was the bescht one so far. (Date added: 2/28/98)

Plenty of room to roam. The beers are very controled and acceptable to many palettes. The Red Ale is deffinetly premium, IPA very good. If you are looking for a good bite try the Jumbolia (not to spicy; use hot sauce).
Good!! (Date added: 9/20/97)

100 YEAR OLD HISTORIC TIMBER AND BRICK FACTORY BUILDING 36000 SQFT. LARGEST BREWPUB IN CHICAGO. TWO FLOORS TWO BARS, BILLIARDS, CIGAR LOUNGE. - UDO HARTTUNG, OWNER RIVER WEST BREWING CO.

There were nine different styles to choose from when I visited, which was impressive, but all of them left me wanting a little more oomph. All of the beers were good, but understated. For example, the seasonal Marzen was a fresh, lightly fruity, enjoyable beer, but it's memory vanished moments after the last swallow. Likewise, the stout was fine, with pleasant coffee tones, but it was quite mild, as if the intention was to create a stout that might win the "least likely to offend" award. Cool building. Good food.

Very good pilsner, IPA, and maerzen. Solid stout. Forget the two Weisses, the Berliner Weisse is particularly bad. Great building, lots of room. Udo knows his beers. Better than Rock Bottom.
