Of all the great breweries in California this could just be the best. It is tiny, tucked away at the far north end of Napa Valley. I didn't expect much from this tiny brewery inside the Calistoga Inn. I'd just spent two weeks in California and visited about 15 breweries and tasted the products of another 15-20. Of all the breweries, this was the only one where all the beers were great. I can't mention a stand out beer because the quality of each was just so high (maybe the barley wine edged out the rest). The people there were friendly and the conversation so good that it's hard to leave. They do bottle several of their beers now in tiny bottling runs, available at the inn and one store in Calistoga only, for now. The price is steep, $5.25 per bottle, but I didn't bat an eye when I considered all the lame beers around for $3-4 per. The Calistoga Inn which houses the NVBCo. is a very nicely kept hotel with excellent food and service. There small bar area with live local musicians seems to be a mecca for locals and visitors alike. The warm welcome by manager Tom and owner Mike Dunnesford lend to the charming appeal of this country inn. Their summer garden is a wonder to dine in with cool shaded breezes. I can appreciate this being from Miami. The beer selections at the bar and in the dining room were well chosen from their micro-brewery sister the Napa Valley Brewing Co. The only regret I had was being unable to bring some of this well made brew home with me. Who knows maybe in the future they will start placing these great beers in bottles. The taster's series they offer is an opportunity to try there full line. After Mr. Dunnesford offered us a tour on the second level of the fermentation tanks and brewing plant. It was a great way to spend the afternoon and evening. We ended up spending the night at the hotel and can't wait to return. (Date added: 6/1/97) |
