7/8/98 - Yahoo Pick of the Week
|
|
Welcome to the Beer Expedition!
Well, we've had quite a month!
If this is your first edition of the Beer Expedition Beer Surf Newsletter, welcome! If you have any comments, please feel free to let us know!
Yahoo Site of the Week: The Beer Expedition got picked as a Yahoo site of the week, sending tons of new readers our way. That also meant that we got tons of new comments! Not that I'm complaining. That's the kind of thing I love to see! Keep them coming! But, that's why the update is so late.
After finally getting all of the comments entered, we've been able to update the site. We have added lots of great comments to lots of breweries that didn't have them before. Keep those great comments coming!
State Pages Updated: In response to reader feedback, we have made another change to the navigation of the site in our never ending quest to make the site easier to use. The change this time is with the state pages. Instead of organizing the pages by city, we now organize them by region. This is a double plus. For one, when you are visiting an city you now know what other cities are close by. In addition, it also make the navigation easier by shrinking the size of the pages by quite a bit.
Currently, listing by region is only available for the US part of the site. If you know of a Postal Code / Canadian region table, please let us know and we can regionalize the Canadian Provinces as well.
By the way, if you prefer, you can still view the state pages by city. To view the city-ordered list, select the [ By City ] link in the title of the region listing.
Take a look around and as always, your feedback is greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Jeff

5/31/98 - New City Page Look
|
Welcome to the Beer Expedition!
Thanks to your fantastic comments, the Beer Expedition has been updated!
I will make this quick this time, just a friendly reminder to visit the Beer Expedition to see the new comments and breweries.
We now have over 1900 comments for 2270 breweries! The goal for the next 6 months is to get at least one comment for each brewery! So, when you visit breweries this summer (and all year round), take notes and send them in!
Just a quick comment on the layout of the city pages. In a neverending quest to make the Beer Expedition very easy to use, I have modified the layout of each of the City pages. Now on the City pages, the layout is split into 3 sections for Open / Proposed / Closed. This makes it a little easier to see the breweries that you can go visit now.
Let me know what you think of the changes!

3/29/98 - lots of little changes
|
|
As you look around, you might see a few new changes this week. Nothing super extraordinary, but some good tweaks.
The first thing that you may notice is a slight change to the look of Beer Expedition. I have tried to make things load a little quicker. There is still a problem with some of the pages with lots of breweries on them (like California). I will work on getting those split up as soon as possible.
Also, everything has moved under the Beerexpedition.com domain now. That took some work, but all is ready now. If you followed an old link to a page on the Craftbrewers.com domain name, you will be redirected back to Beerexpedition.com.
Keep the comments coming. Updates are less frequent these days, but I try to get to them every few weeks.
Cheers,
Jeff

1/17/98 - Big 'ole update!
|
|
We've added more comments (we get an average of around 50 per week now) and made a few improvements to the page to give you more information.
All of the index pages now have more information on the other pages that they index. For instance, the North America page has information on the number of each type of brewery in each of the states/provinces listed on that page.
In addition, each index item now has the work updated or new if there is any updated or new information on that item in the last 30 days.
Take a look, it's easier to see than it is to explain. And, let us know what you think of the changes.
Other changes include updates of the Awards information. We now have awards info for all previous GABFs and 1997's World Beer Cup. (For more info on the World Beer Cup, and especially info on the 1998 entry details, check out http://www.beertown.org).
Cheers,
Jeff

12/14/97 - Happy Holidays!
|
|
We have finished the final update for the year. Let me take this moment to offer a very hearty thanks for all of the great comments that have been submitted this year, all of the great suggestions, and all of the word of mouth that have helped grow the database even more. As we start to look back on our first full year, here are a few interesting stats for that first year:
Currently in the database there are 1401 comments on 2214 breweries. That's an average of around 28 comments added per week. Of course it has been growing. The first month there were only a few a week. Now I get around 50 comments per week.
So once again, thanks for making this page everything that it is. There are many new features added in the coming months. Let us know if there are any things you would like to see. And keep those comments coming!!!
Happy Holidays,
Jeff

12/09/97 - Whew!
|
|
Well, it was a lot of work, but it's finally done. Finally...
Lots of changes were made. As a matter of fact, nearly every brewery page is different. Over 200 comments were added. More will be added this weekend. Then, that will be the last update until after the first of the year (I'll be on vacation).
There are lots of features that I will be working on while on vacation. Between the visits will relatives and the pumpkin pie I will try to update the pages with more information on what changes when and making it easier to get to.
One cool little feature that has been added now is that you can e-mail most pages to a friend or yourself. Just click on the 'Mail this Page' button at the bottom of the page and follow the prompts. You can e-mail a page in text or HTML. (HTML looks much better but not all people can access HTML based mail).
Look around, enjoy, and stop complaining, it's free!
That said, constructive criticism and suggestions always accepted and appreciated!
Happy Holidays,
Jeff

11/23/97 - Major update coming soon... Really, I mean it!
|
|
It's taken quite a while to complete this latest update. If you have sent in comments or changes,
don't worry, they are being processed. They were not lost.
I am in the process of finally redesigning some of the back end processing that goes on behind the
scenes to make the Beer Expedition. When everything is all done, you won't notice much on the
surface, but things will flow much smoother in the background. Hopefully, in the end, it will
make the updates easier to do!
On top of all of that, the Beer Expedition is being migrated to the Real Beer servers at the
http://www.beerexpedition.com address. And (and a big and) gak of Beer is my Life are consolidating
our data to help eliminate errors and missed breweries!
So, please hang in there. I will try to get an update done sometime the week after Thanksgiving!
Cheers,
Jeff
